Aloha Hawaii Home & Garden Network,
It's usually nature that inspires artists, composers and even lovers to great works of art and passionate love. Unheard of for a person to inspire a work of nature, such as in granite used for a kitchen remodel by Homeowners Design Center, unless your name is Van Gogh. And as kitchen designer Jessica Omoto describes it, there were several challenges with this remodel. Custom tile flooring and 6 slabs of difficult to find granite named after a man who cut his ear off and heard voices inside his head. You think they saw it coming?
As Omoto recalls, "(The kitchen) had existing (custom) flooring that he wanted to keep... and he wanted very specific granite with specific coloring to it, and we needed a lot of it." The granite couldn't be sourced in Hawaii and had to be shipped in from California.
The kitchen was a typical '80s era kitchen that needed some serious upgrading, despite still being functional. Homeowners Design Center swapped out the almond-beige colored laminated cabinets with African mahogany cabinets by Canyon Creek to achieve a more koa look.
The Van Gogh granite and African mahogany cabinets vibrantly transform this ocean-side kitchen.
"For the (kitchen) appliances, we did a mixture of Sub-Zero Wolf and Thermador. We did drawers for both the refrigerator and freezer (from) Sub-Zero... and we did Thermador for the cooktop.., a Freedom cooktop so you can place the pot or pan anywhere on that surface and it will cook," says Omoto.
The custom tile flooring in the kitchen was another big challenge. The homeowner really liked the existing flooring and wanted to keep it. In order to keep it and install it in the rest of the area, "(The homeowner) had custom tile made to match (the existing ones) and we went ahead and installed them in the areas that were changed or modified," remembers Omoto.

To cap it all off and to be able to brighten the kitchen space, Homeowners Design Center added a lot of lighting; recessed lights, under-cabinet and in-cabinet lighting, and monorail lighting over the island.
Definitely a kitchen that looks inspired by one of the greatest painters ever.
